But you never were a lady to begin with

I have had 'Luck Be a Lady' stuck in my head on a solid rotation since the HSO Round 1 prompt went up. This is producing more ideas about Vriska being unladylike than it is ideas involving actual gambling, unfortunately.
I am starting to pull together a story idea, but at the moment it's mostly about the emotional payoff at the end, and the constrictions that puts on what the premise and setting can be. Basically I have just one insight about blackrom that I like, and I've worked out how to turn it into an emotional resolution. I'm still tossing around ways to use the prompt, though. Using a Vriska prompt to write a Vriska story is almost too neat a fit: Vriska's entire life fits the gambling theme, so how do you actually make the theme stand out in an interesting way?
Some recent update chatter:
* Oh my god could I ship Aranea/Meenah more. I'm so glad there's an Aranea♥Meenah team in the HSO, even if I wish they were represented in every other quadrant too.
* I love the way that Dave constantly checks in with Rose, turns to her for opinions and advice even when he then disagrees. I feel like it's partly a reflection of what their relationship has always been - it's Rose he goes to with his dreams and his puppet trauma, even though he knows that she will have a field day with them, whereas John he keeps a front up for and Jade he tries to protect - but partly also to do with the dynamics of the group they've been in for the last year. Clearly he and Rose don't hang out as much as he and Terezi or Rose and Kanaya do - they each have projects going down - and I think as a result he feels the need to check the bond repeatedly when they are together, make sure they still have something no one else has.
* Although also I feel like the two of them naturally draw together in this kind of situation, where there are too many people and most of them are trolls and they don't actually know what's going on. And I love that Rose is as guilty as Dave of failing to follow the important conversation happening, because she's busy whispering to her brother about their sleeping teen ectomom. (They're looking at us.)
* AND THEN, FROM OUT OF NOWHERE, TRAGIC DOOMED TIMELINE FEELINGS. Ugh, Rose /o\
* I also love the way that Kanaya goes to them when she doesn't know what's going on. Not just to Rose, but to Rose and Dave, that she's comfortable interrupting their whispering when she's feeling out of place in the larger group.
* Jake what on earth is wrong with you. What were you going to do, if Aranea hadn't knocked you out? You kept talking about killing Hitler, so, what, were you going to beat her to death? Not cool, no matter how adorable your backup helmet line is.
* I was really interested by the stuff about how Jake doesn't naturally make connections between media and real life. He adores movies, but unlike John, he doesn't relate their narratives to his life? Hmmm.
* ... I have never been so disproportionately excited by silhouettes. By the confirmation of hairstyles. And yet. I am so pleased that the Haindmaid keeps her awesome 'do, and intrigued by the fact that Redglare apparently has long hair, and god I want to meet them all so bad. But I also sort of want to not have fandom be distracted by any more boys until like eight hundred Aranea/Meenah fics have been written? AND YET. LET ME MEET NON-SHOUTY MCNUBS. Let me see how the Psiioniic relates to Meenah after watching himself being tortured by her for millennia! Let me find out whether the Summoner became a hero! Difficult.
* I would like for Terezi to have all of the conversations with imaginary people, please. That is a thing that can become a meme if it likes.

Date: 2012-06-04 12:05 pm (UTC)Me, too! But it's weird, because he obviously *does* make connections, otherwise he wouldn't have thought it was a rule of adventure to kill Hitler. I think Jake is adorably doltish, basically.
I love your reading of Dave, Rose and Dave, and Kanaya and Rose and Dave. The other side of the coin (heh) is that I *love* how on the ball Terezi is being. She's the only one! But she's got it covered.

God, yes. And Dave's consciousness of that, goddamn I want to see so much more of how they relate to each other.
