Huh, that's true. I assumed the "kill Hitler" thing was a ref to the xkcd strip on the same day (unless hs came first?), but that doesn't make it not an important character moment. Maybe he rarely makes connections so when he does, he attaches to them like a steamroller? (Also, would brain!Dirk have been making Alice references if he'd been there? This 'potential' thing is fascinating.)
