I think you've just put your finger on what made me so uncomfortable about Ruby in the first half of S1, because I really thought they were going to have some horribly sexualised and trigger-y version of her fairytale. Then her backstory ep rolled around, and it turned out that Ruby was both Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf, which I both loved and did not see coming. I also noticed that immediately after that episode was when Ruby's clothes became less overtly sexualised, which I'm not sure what to make of, but I thought was interesting.
