It actually got to a point where I found it hard to visualize a woman as a compelling main character, especially in a romance - my mind just kept twisting it around to men.
That's the worst, I agree. I still get into moods where I want something easy and self-indulgent and I go straight for slash, because I'm still wired to think that's going to be more fun.
There are definitely fandoms with female characters who have imporant/angsty/buddy-cop/ship-friendly relationships with both male and female characters, but slash-centric fandoms are more likely to be huge, and it's a matter of luck whether any particular slash-centric fandom is going to have important character relationships featuring girls as well. Or whether a couple of good writers are going to be there to do the groundwork to create an important relationship that isn't really there in canon, like Sif/Loki or Darcy/Clint.
