“News of the OTW bubbled up from many directions at once, most likely through my associations with Escapade, but also through an academic colleague whose partner at the time was involved. I was so excited to hear about the emergence of this fan advocacy network which brought together fannish lawyers willing to help protect our fair use rights as fans; fan scholars publishing their work through a peer-reviewed journal; fan programmers using their skills in support of the community; and of course, an archive where fans controlled what happened to their own works without the interference of web 2.0 interests.

Each of these things is important on its own terms, but taken together, this organization has been a transformative force, in all senses of the words, for fans and their rights to participate.”

For our anniversary Henry Jenkins talks fan studies, students, fandom changes over the years & why it's worth fighting for: http://goo.gl/fm19m5

1. My little sister is visiting from the Republic of Ireland. She was in a pub in Dublin, and a couple of people asked her what she was doing in Ireland, and she said: "I'm British. I've come to take your land." And then she had to go to the airport and flee the country immediately. Well, no. I mean, yes but no. She's on loan back to a Scottish university to work on a project she doesn't want to be on, for a senior academic that she doesn't much like, for a grand total of zero pounds sterling (something holding references and publications over her head something something.) Sometimes I think about the difference between having a job and having a career, and at the moment I think it's that when I have to do things I don't want to do, at the behest of people I don't like, I at least get paid for it.

On her first day back, she was on a bus where somebody threw a bicycle at the driver, who stood up and chased him down the street. And because she hasn't been living in Glasgow for a couple of years she considered this 'weird' and 'frighting', and not 'a good reason to be late for work' or 'a tuesday'. So I've been loaning her my car, and as my car is held together by string and happy thoughts (that, of course, being the other big difference between having a career and a job) I'd warned her to keep an eye out for any of the engine management lights coming on. Anyway, cue later that night when she called frantic because there was a light on the dashboard that wouldn't go off. It was the handbrake light. She hadn't let the handbrake off, and it was the handbrake light. I love her.

2. I have had Freya - ridiculous mostly labrador, much loved bane of my existence, and reason for getting out of bed on mornings when I just want to go nope - for three years now, and to celebrate my mum made her a birthday cake. Liver & kidney, which, yes, is as disgusting as it sounds. It's worth noting that I have passed thirty-four birthdays on this green Earth, and my mother has yet resisted any temptation to make me a birthday cake.

I've actually been having some behaviour problems with Freya. Earlier in the summer she was attacked by two Vizslas (a couple of stitches in her eyelid, a bad fright, and me nearly coming to blows with the owner.) But ever since then she's been determined to get her revenge in first with almost every female dog she meets.

In almost all respects I think dogs are better than people, but you can't explain female solidarity or internalised misogyny to a dog; then again, you can't explain those to most people, so maybe we'll call that one a draw.

And she's still a total pet with people, so.

3. It occurred to me that I'd never actually made use of the Netflix free trial. I watched Below Her Mouth (porn, basically), a bunch of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries (the best hangover telly there has ever been or will be), two seasons of You Me Her (actually really good), a season and a half of iZombie (I thought the first season was awesome; during the second I thought that the joke that Liv basically becomes the person whose brain she'd eaten was wearing thin, and I didn't give a rat's ass about anything that was going on with Major.)

I tried the first episodes of Santa Clarita Diet (too gross) and One Day at a Time (too much laugh track) but nah.

But the bigger thing was that Netflix has half-assed its crackdown on vpns, so while you can't watch anything, you can see how much better the US version is, kind of killing any desire I had to shell out for the clearly inferior UK version.

4. I have been on this thing of writing for more exchanges in 2017, and honestly, I'm not sure this has been leading to my best work: Exhibit A: my contributions to [community profile] auexchange

Truth, Justice, and a Really Good Dental Plan (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Superhero AU)

"What I'm saying is: do you think they're trying to Avengers Assemble us? Collecting New York's finest superheroes, and---"

The elevator doors dinged open, revealing Hitchcock and Scully.

"--'Kay," said Jake. "Never mind."

The Morning After the War Before (Person of Interest, Everybody Lives AU)

Sometimes Root wasn't sure that they hadn't lost the war after all, and that she wasn't living out some digital afterlife in the best simulation the Machine could come up with.

Weekly Reading

What I’ve Just Finished Reading

The Paper Menagerie by Ken Liu
It's available for free online here. A really affecting story. What made it for me where the small details, like the water buffalo wanting to wallow and jumping into the soy sauce.

What I’m Reading Now

The Lost World by Arthur Conan Doyle
I really like Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, so I picked this up at a book flea market. I'm not very far in yet. I'm currently at the point where professor Challenger invites the protagonist back into his house after having bodily thrown him out a moment before. He's certainly a memorable character. I loved the interaction with his wife.

What I Plan to Read Next

Probably This Census-Taker by China Mieville since it needs to go back to the library soon.

Or two weeks and six days, rather. The countdown is still visible here. All pinch hits are currently claimed, but the pinch hit list is always open for volunteers, as is the beta reader list. And do not forget to double- (or triple-)check your Dear Creator letters to make certain they are unlocked and readable. ... In short, same song and dance as before, but keep those tap shoes tapping. :-)

OTW 10th Anniversary Chat

What were some of your early experiences like when your work gained its own fans?

*MarthaWells
I think my favorite experience is seeing the fan art, and seeing fanfic from my books show up in Yuletide. That’s hugely exciting to see fanfic and fan art of your work, especially to someone who was a fan from way back in the print zine era.

*SeananMcGuire
The first time something I’d created showed up as a fandom option for Yuletide, I literally cried. Happy tears! But it was like, HOLY WHAT NO HOW OMG VIXY LOOK AT THIS DO YOU SEE THIS. It’s amazing. It’s still amazing. I can’t read any of the fanfic of my own work, but knowing it exists makes me so happy.

OTW 10th Anniversary Chat

What things have you been excited to see in recent years, either regarding fandom or work in your genre(s)?

*Catherine R.
I really like fanfiction and its explosion on the internet. I think fanfic is a great way for people to learn the craft skills of writing. Many of my college students fall in love with writing that way: by reading fanfic and then starting to write it themselves. I always encourage them to go for it! I love the supportive structure it creates for imagination and fantasy to run wild. I think that realm is so important. Imagination lets us explore quandaries of desire and justice and truth and conflict: all the central problems of what it means to be human.

*Christina L.
It’s been incredibly exciting to see so many writers from our fandom specifically or fandom in general out there publishing books. Of course we all know the big ones—EL James, Cassie Clare—but there are others from the Twi world that had fantastic voices and ideas and who are now also bestsellers. Sally Thorne, Alice Clayton, Nina Bocci, Leisa Rayven, Mariana Zapata, Amanda Weaver—all of these women wrote fantastic fic.

Might be jumping the gun a bit, but here's a post on which to organize meetups!

Comment here with your location and whether you want to organize or just attend a writing meetup.

I'm in the Boston area, and would like to organize a ~bi-weekly writing-and-coffee/tea meet-up. Likely in Cambridge, flexible to Somerville/Watertown/Boston proper/etc, depending on what people want.

Darkest Night Lingering Pinch hit

We have a lingering pinch hit over at Darkest Night.

Fandoms are The Big Bang Theory (TV), Castle, Political RPF, Airwolf.
[personal profile] hauntedd posting in [community profile] yuletide
Hi fellow Yuletiders! Noms close in less than 24 hours (or maybe they've already closed by the time this is approved?) and as we move into signups and writing and reading, freneticfloetry and I wanted to give a small reminder/invitation (ok honestly, it's a copy/paste job with minor edits... #efficiency) to participate in the Misses Clause Challenge*.

Now in its seventh year, the Misses Clause Challenge was created to promote the inclusion, expansion, and celebration of women in fanfiction. We'd like to challenge you all to think about the ways women are represented in fanworks, and write fic either centered on female characters or fic within a fandom with a rich and diverse cast of characters that includes valuable and important female voices.

Participation is easy! Initially, the challenge set out to include more female characters in fic using the Bechdel Test as a barometer. But honestly, plenty of sources can (and do) successfully pass without putting female characters anywhere near the forefront. So the general rule for participating in the Misses Clause Challenge is simple:

Write women.

That's it! Write women who are celebrated, who are unsung, who are the heroes of their own stories or the unfortunate victims of circumstance. Write women talking, fighting, saving the day, or just going about their business. Write women of all ages, shapes, sizes, races, creeds, sexual orientations, mental and physical abilities, or moral fiber. Write women, full stop.

Easy enough, right? So if you’re willing, and we hope you are…

· Write a Yuletide assignment or treat with one or more women as the focus. Femslash, female POV, ensemble fic, whatever works for you — as long as there's a female character front and center, your fic fulfills the challenge.
· Tag your finished fic with "Misses Clause Challenge".

There is still maybe time to nominate women, if you're so inclined. And there is definitely time to think about requesting prompts that feature female characters so that the letters post is full of options.

From there, search out those that request women, maybe bookmark one for later, or even start a treat. There's a lot of female characters nominated annually and a number of requests will coincide with that. Maybe one of the letters might start or keep the creative juices flowing.

And to all of those who have taken up the challenge, or who are considering doing so this year, I just want to say, on behalf of both myself and freneticfloetry, Thank You. We try to keep this very low key with absolutely no pressure to participate, and yet we're continually blown away by the support and the number of folks who take on the challenge as well as the types of awesome fic that you guys create year after year. So, thank you, again, for your participation, your openness to the challenge, your totally legitimate concerns and critiques. Here’s to Yuletide 2017, and another great wave of new Misses Clause stories.

Sincerely,

G (hauntedd) & Court (freneticfloetry)

*The challenge name was meant to be a punny play on the fic season and a bad movie, and was not meant to be exclusionary in any way. (And yes, the "e" was intentional.)
