Hello, everyone! [personal profile] shopfront and I are joining [personal profile] samuraiteras co-mods for [community profile] femslashex, and we’re both very excited for this year’s round. The rules and schedule will be going up shortly, but here’s a shortlist of changes from previous rounds:

  • Schedule: The exchange will be running a few weeks earlier this year, with nominations starting July 26

  • Visible Requests: Requests will be visible during sign-ups. This will allow participants to check they are matchable if they want to request and offer only smaller fandoms, and also allow treaters to start writing sooner.

  • Default Penalty: There is a partial new mod amnesty for defaulters. Participants who defaulted after the deadline, defaulted after an extension, or submitted a placeholder in 2016 will continue to have to sit out this round before signing up again. Participants who have defaulted multiple years in a row will have to complete a treat from a previous year’s requests before signing up for this year’s round, or sit out a round, counting from 2016 onwards. That means that if you defaulted last year and it was a second default for you you can still participate this year. Anyone who defaulted last year and also defaults this year will need to complete a treat or sit out a year.

  • Exchange 101 and Tumblr: In last year’s wrap-up post, several people requested an “Exchange 101” post for people new to AO3 exchanges; that will be up within the week. More of a Tumblr presence was also suggested, and we’ll be more active on Tumblr this round. If you have any suggestions for tags to post to or communities to signal-boost Tumblr announcements, please let us know!

  • There was also some interest in adding vids as a medium this round, but as neither I nor [personal profile] shopfront have any vid exchange experience we are currently focusing on getting up to speed with how things currently run. . We’re both very excited to expand the mediums allowed in the exchange and hope to include vids from next year.

An updated rules post will be up soon. That post will have the schedule as well, but here is the 2017 schedule:
    26 July-10 August: Nomination Period
    13-23 August:: Signups open
26 August: Assignments will be sent out by this date
    7 October: Fanworks due
13 October: Archive goes live (or as soon as everyone has a gift)
    21 October: Creators revealed

Hello, everybody. *straightens tie, pushes glasses up bridge of nose* It's 2017, and we're just about ready to get started on the fifth round of [community profile] femslashex. (Five years! Way to go!) But! There's been a key change, and it's to our staff. Our founder, [personal profile] muccamukk, has taken a bow, and godspeed to her, but she's not left anything to chance. I'm still here in my normal supporting (i.e. bumbling assistant) role, but we've got two all-new mods in the form of [personal profile] shopfront and [personal profile] withinadream, here to keep the femslash train on the rails, so feel free to say "Hello!" and "How ya do!" if that's your thing. We'll be posting our official introduction and time frame(s) here soon, but, for now, just know that we're on the job. :-)

[personal profile] bookherd and her entourage have returned to Virginia. I miss her terribly, even though I'm enjoying this slower, less-social pace of life. For example, I squandered the entirety of yesterday in reading fanfic on the front porch; it was delicious.

I have spent at least three decades low-key convinced that bobby pins (aka hair grips) are a scam. It turns out that all this time I've just been attempting to use them upside down.

I've signed up for [community profile] remixrevival, which is open for sign-ups through the 30th. Both art and fic are eligible.

Back when I first encountered remixing, I wanted SO BADLY to participate in one someday, but at the time I was only writing one-offs and could barely conceive of a future when I'd have enough work in a single fandom to qualify. Nowadays my catalog qualifies (and has for several years, although not in as many fandoms as my AO3 dash might first suggest), but the last time I signed up for a remix exchange I got snagged in some headgames about remixing itself, ugh. I'm hoping everything goes much more smoothly this time.

(And I also hope that lots more people sign up, so there's more cool stuff on offer to remix!)

Remix Revival 2017 A fanart/fanfic remix exchange with signups closing on the 30th. I think this is the first panfandom remix exchange allowing both, I'm pretty excited!

[community profile] drawesome A fanart community that has had some fun prompts

Let's Make Games and Drink Responsibly: A gathering for people in the local games community, it was a lot of fun and I had some really interesting and inspiring conversations. Cam came along and it was perfect for him, as someone who is really interested in discussing and making games but isn't working on anything right now. Also Scott Ludlum was there! (I was too shy to talk to him but he said he was happy to be among friends, which was nice to see) It's apparently going to be monthly, best way to follow it right now is probably the Let's Make Games Facebook group.

calvinahobbes: Calvin and Hobbes watching tv (calvintv)
[personal profile] calvinahobbes
I watched Anne With An E, and I absolutely loathed it. I watched the whole thing, because I accidentally started it with my mom, who kept insisting it might become better (it didn't) or, later, might be a decent show if we pretended it had nothing to do with Anne of Green Gables (nope).

The production value is great - I was able to enjoy the costumes and set designs and authentic food, although eventually it became weird how the characters were constantly eating or cooking. The problem with this show is that it is REALLY BAD fanfic. Jerry Boute is made a major character, and from episode 1 it's obvious that Moira Walley-Beckett is trying to set him up as a romantic interest, for absolutely no fathomable reason. Maybe she wants to emphasise the French presence in Canada by foregrounding one of the only French-Canadian characters in the book??

I might easily be able to forgive a change like that, but it proved to be a foreboding of how Beckett approaches canon: imagine her just gleefully tearing up the original books and tossing them across the room. Again, if she changed things with some sense of respect for the originals, in an endeavour to make the stories more suitable for television, that would not automatically be a problem. But Beckett seems to inexplicably think that L.M. Montgomery's original novels were boring and devoid of plot, so she freely invents conflicts and challenges that never would have belonged in quiet Avonlea. This short first season (first? I hope last and only!) contains: a dramatic horse racing scene, a cliff-hanger, a pedo!threat, a housefire, the death of a major side-character, the attempted suicide (WTAF I could scream!) of a major character... and these are just the ones I can mention without really spoiling the plot. So. Many. Unnecessary. Changes!

The actors are very good, not least Amybeth McNulty who plays Anne with an impressive amount of talent - she's the perfect fit - and she does an admirable job of acting out Anne's verbosity, mood-swings, and many many honest-to-god anxiety attacks and flashbacks because this is a "psychologically realistic" production, apparently. But the actors can't save the atrociously melodramatic plot, or the fact that this has very, very little to do with Anne of Green Gables. I hate it! Don't bother with it!

(This review by Sarah Larson is good and only a bit more spoilery than mine.)

I am still not dead! Not many things of great import have been happening, or at least not things I can talk about in detail yet. I'm still flinging myself at exchanges at an alarming rate; right now both [community profile] darkestnightex (all varieties of darkfic themes) and [community profile] fandomgrowthexchange (very rare fandoms, ships, or characters) are taking nominations and I'm crouched behind the couch with my tail twitching, trying to decide if I should pounce on them. Metaphorically.

I wrote a lot for [community profile] nonconathon -- my assignment and three pinch hits -- and none of them are the breakout hits of the exchange (original works are the way to go there, not weird small fandoms), but the recipients seem pleased and I got to do some interesting and varied dynamics, so overall a success. And I got two things gifted to me, both of which were delicious!

cut for details; fandoms are Voltron and Fire Emblem Fates )

FMK: Mélusine and Juniper Time

[personal profile] melannen
Mélusine by Sarah Monette is a very long, very good, very fucked-up H/C darkfic in a canon I don't know.

That's not necessarily a criticism, by the way, it's enough my id that I have spent many a delightful lost weekend voluntarily reading exactly that sort of thing.

Anyway, I enjoyed it enough that it is getting kept (after all, some day I might not be able to find fanfic like this on the internet anymore) but I don't think I care enough about the non-id parts to go looking up the canon. (If I did I would probably just end up really liking Shannon, anyway, and like I said it's really obvious there is like 0 fic about him.)

And still very annoyed that it had exactly nothing to do with Mélusine; if someone tried to name a fantasy novel Cinderella and then not have anything to do with Cinderella except, like, the ruling family having a shoe in their heraldry and also there was a fairy godmother as a minor character in one chapter, nobody would let you get away with that.

Also, it got me re-reading a bunch of old Doctor/Master fic just in time for me to be mildly optimistic about the show again, so there's that.

Juniper Time by Kate Wilhelm was not a bad book, and I'm glad I read it, but I also don't think I need to keep it, and I didn't particularly like it. It gets the "if you like this sort of thing, this is probably the sort of thing you will like" rating, with a caveat for me being unsure about its portrayal of First Nations people. The first thing that struck me is that it didn't feel like a SF novel, or even a genre novel at all really. I spent a lot of time thinking about why. It's a story about the building of an international space station and first contact with aliens set amid the collapse of Western capitalist civilization, so it ought to be an SF novel. It's definitely at least partly just the writing style. But I think it's mostly a question of what the book thinks is important, fr. ex: not the space station or the aliens or even particularly the collapse of civilization except as they affect the two main characters' many personal issues, which are the only thing the narrative actually seems to think we might be interested in. Whic isn't to say I don't like a character-focused SF novel, but an SF novel where one of the main characters is an astronomer who spends half his time in space, a) I would expect it to spend more than five pages actually in space, and b) I would expect him to not spend all of those five pages thinking about nothing but his marital issues. Also, you know, I 100% don't care about the dude's personal issues and am only mildly interested in hers.

I am glad I have read this but am pretty sure I will never desire to read it again, so K pile it is. And it inspired me to finish Always Coming Home, so it was definitely worth it.

Last week's winner was Enchantress From the Stars! Looking forward to it. From discussion in the comments, I think I attempted to write that story once when I was about twelve.

The loser on overall K votes was Pebble in the Sky, but I'm invoking the rule that says a K winner must also have a majority for K votes, which Pebble in the Sky didn't have, and giving it to the Stasheff instead.

(I also just noticed that I never announced a K for the LGBT-themed week. No book in that poll had a majority of K votes - or anything close to a majority, even - so I'm not calling a K. The overall most K votes was the David Gerrold book, but it had almost twice as many f/m votes as K, so I have added it to the F pile instead.)

Responses to Mélusine and Juniper Time coming later today, I promise.

This week, a friend assigned me Humorous SF, so here we go!

How FMK works, short version: I am trying to clear out my unreads. So there is a poll, in which you get to pick F, M, or K. F means I should spend a night of wild passion with the book ASAP, and then decide whether to keep it or not. M means I should continue to commit to a long-term relationship of sharing my bedroom with it. K means it should go away immediately. Anyone can vote, you don't have to actually know anything about the books.

I pick a winner on Friday night (although won't actually close the poll, people can still vote,) and report results/ post the new poll on the following Tuesday, and write a response to the F winner sometime in the next week. That will leave me only four books behind, whoo.

Link to long version of explanation (on first poll)

Poll: Brust, Dickson, Doctorow, Foster, Gardner, Hines, Jones, Laumer, Martinez, Moore J, Moore MJ, Pinkwater, Pratchett, Robinson, anthologies )

1. I have a guest dog this weekend. An acquaintance from the park had to go down south all of a sudden because of a death in the family, and as she had enough to deal without trying to wrangle a dog sitter I offered to take him.

Barnaby is an Australian Labradoodle, and so cute that I've been googling pictures of puppies from breeders, or at least I was until I saw the price tags attached to them, at which point I remembered that one of the reasons I got Freya in the first place is that I was offered her for the low, low price of free to a good home.

The other reason I've only got one dog, despite the fact that ever since I switched from split shifts at work I've thought that it might be nice for her to have a friend, is that Freya is a jealous wee besom. She's been sharing her toys and treats fine, they've been drinking out of the same water bowl, but every time I go to pet Barnaby she'll walk between us and shoulder him out of the way. Earlier he got brave enough to come up on the couch with me and Freya jumped up and bowled the poor little guy off as though he was a skittle.

This is why, despite Barnaby feeling like a literal cloud, I've barely gotten to pet him.

Barnaby is currently curled up on Freya's dogbed, and Freya is up next to me snoring like a freight train. I guess guarding me 24/7 from other dogs I might like to pet is tiring work.

2. They're announcing the actor for the Thirteenth Doctor after the tennis tomorrow, and I will be tuned in despite the fact that I haven't actually watched very much of this last season. I watched the first two or three episodes, and I've liked Capaldi as the Doctor, and Bill seemed cute, but I have harboured a dislike of Matt Lucas ever since Little Britain was fucking everywhere, and I couldn't get over them making fucking Nardol a backdoor companion.

Anyway, if they announce Pheobe Waller-Bridge (or, really, anyone who isn't a white guy) I will gladly jump back in, and if they announce Kris Marshall I can close the door on this part of my fannish life with nary a look back. I actually think Marshall is a better actor than a lot of people do (he's been serviceable tilting into good in Death in Paradise) but the casting of another tall, goofy looking white guy would represent such a failure of imagination on the part of the showrunners that it'd make it really hard for me to care.

3. For those of us who missed Remix, [community profile] remixrevival is here. Yay!
